I've shared some emails with "Mom" on this one. Some websites say that it's not enough calories. Other websites show that to be the right amount. Just like some websites show that an hour of running is in excess of 1,000 calories burned an hour while other sites show something more along the lines of 600. It's hard to know who to believe.

I can say with some authority that my system seems to work fine for me. I know that at 1,500 calories daily with a workout, I can lose 2 pounds a week. My "cracked" eating that I've been doing lately I'd probably estimate to be around 2,000 calories. Low and behold, my weight loss has slowed down to around a pound a week. 500 calories x 7 days = 3500 calories which is about a pound. So the math seems to add up for me. And it's awfully hard to sway from what I've had work for me in previous years and what is working for me now.

But I think it's good discussion. I'm honestly curious to hear from these people that say I should be eating like 3k+ calories a day. I can maybe see doing that if I were in big volume training. But I don't know anyone first hand that can eat that much and lose weight by only working out an hour or so a day.

I have to second 21stCenturyMom... you're not eating enough calories and you'll pay with a slower metabolism in the long run. I of what I speak - I've been trying to lose this thyroid weight for over a decade and have tried everything. Turns out, when I stick to a generally nutritious eating plan (i.e. keep mostly honest but still have pizza and chocolate a couple times a month) of about 2000 - 2200 calories a day, I lose weight relatively easily. Throw in some moderate tri training (plus adequate nutrition to fuel those workouts) and it comes off even easier.

I finally got fed up trying to track it all and found the most amazing program that's been my personal savior. I think it works well for geeky types, you might want to take a look at the free trial (dietpower.com). It does all the thinking for you.

Sorry for the long comment, but I don't have your e-mail. This is the note I sent out to others that are hoping to make it tomorrow:

The Inaugural "Speed Saturday"

Hi all!

I'm really excited about the possibility of a good turn out for intervals tomorrow! We've got about 8-12 of you "signed up!"

We'll have prizes* and lots of goodies in a SWAG bag** for everyone.

This workout is whatever you want it to be. Julia talked about running a 5K on the track to get her base 5K HR figured out. Sarah (Pharmie) will be finishing her long run for the week and meeting us at the track for the last mile or 2 of her run. Jon (Borsch) and I are going try a new interval workout (5K pace 800, slow jog 100, nearly "all out" 200, slow jog 100, repeat 5-6 times), but we'll be on our own at different paces. You can tag along with one of us or make up your own workout - you're on your own for whatever you want to do. As Jon said: no coaches, no pressure.

We'll meet on the track at 9, chat for a bit and figure out some workouts, and do our thing. Check the end of my last 2 posts for some details and reminders:

And remember: bring extra layers for your boy-parts or girl-parts - it's going to be a little chilly! Hope to see you all tomorrow!

Steve

* There are no prizes.

** SWAG bag contains no goodies. In fact, there isn't even a bag. Sorry.

Gah! The trainer! Don't say it!!

And show up at 9 on Saturday if you can make it! We'll have ALL kinds of fitness levels there, so no worries! Pharmie hasn't done intervals for MONTHS, and even when she does, she's still pretty slow. I say that in my most loving way possible...

Anyway, we'd love to have you!! I'll have a few more details posted at the end of tomorrows post! Hope to see you there!!

As I said last time you posted your diet stuff - you are not eating enough calories. Seriously. You should be getting at least 2,000 a day, not the measly 1500 you are trying to maintain. The problem with the super lo-cal approach is that your body compensates by slowing your metabolism in an effort to keep you from starving to death. Add in anothe 500 cal/day and have some patience. If you lose 2 pounds a week you are doing great. Just keep the protein high and the carbs low (but do eat some) and dont' kill yourself. It will all work out.

I am a life long dieter - I know stuff. Listen to the Mom!
