Turning The Corner

Actually, it’ll be more a hairpin turn of sorts. It’s becoming clearly obvious to me that I’ve slothed for entirely too long and that something needs to give before the sludge in my veins gets any thicker. Even my “fat, off-season” clothes are getting much too tight for my own liking. I haven’t stepped on a scale in ages, but if I had to guess I bet I’m 30 pounds over race weight (which I’ll admit is about 10 pounds less than what I should “normally” weigh… but that still makes me 20 pounds over). Not to mention that these days, doing simple tasks like bouncing Caity around seems to an threshold workout for me. I don’t foresee a triathlon comeback this year and there certainly won’t be an Ironman in my near future (i.e. 2008), but I should probably start doing something. ANYTHING!

The weather here hasn’t been entirely cooperative. It’s mid-April and it’s 31 degrees and snowing here today?! That and I’m trying to manage the purchase of a new house, a move (to another suburb in MN, for those that don’t already know), and sale of my existing house. But my goal is to start May 1st. That gives me a couple weeks still to wrap things up and to mentally prepare for the suckage that is will to occur when I attempt to set in motion that which has been still for over a year and a half. I’m totally not looking forward to it, but something has to give. Preferably, not the waistband of my pants.

  1. Hey Chris! Glad to see you’re planning a comeback. Don’t get too frustrated. Having a wee one come into your life changes things for the better as a family, and usually for the worse as an athlete.

Priorities change. Just the way it works.

My girls are now 11 and 8 and I’m getting a lot more time to return to training since they no longer need my full-time attention. Actually, it was about five years after the birth of our first daughter before I was able to carve out larger blocks of time on a consistent basis. That being said, we’re all different and kids (and your spouse) will dictate different time schedules.

  2. It sounds like a time for celebration to me! And forget this all or nothing business. Just do a little bit now like lift weights at home for 20 minutes a day or go for short, slow runs and don’t even count therm - no watch, no Garmin, no recording. You are just warming up.

CELEBRATE! You have a beautiful baby and you are about to get back to taking care of yourself. Woo Hoo!!!

There is no suckage if you think of everything you do as a good thing - a thing you were not doing before you got going again.

  3. Doh! I didn’t really mean the “suckage” as I hate working out. It was more that I wasn’t looking forward to those first few weeks where *everything* is hard no matter what you’re doing or how slow or easy you’re doing it.

I’m actually looking forward to doing the workouts. Not really sure I’m ready to face the reality of exactly how out of shape I am.

  4. Chris,

I am 15 lbs over my IM race weight. Woah. All i can say is that I can feel it when I run :o).

I found that when life gets faster, I need to slow down more and do something. Enjoy the time you spent with the little one :)

  5. Hey twin! Well you’re for sure not alone, I’m much more behind the curve this year than last, and I think it’s just one of those things that has to happen. You can’t fire all cylinders all the time. Not only that but what everyone has said is right, priorities change and it’s all about enjoying the journey right? Now it looks like we have another cool journey to look forward too… early morning workouts are the best for me, as the day takes off with everything else when the rest of the crew wake up! Welcome to parenthood my friend!
