From Hero to Zero

I can’t believe that it’s only been three weeks since Ironman Wisconsin?! It honestly seems like it was months and months ago. It’s pretty depressing to see how much tighter my clothes fit now in just that short period of time and to feel how out of shape I’ve become (or at least feel like I’ve become). I haven’t actually tried working out yet at all, but I’ve done things like jog across the street to my car in the parking lot. I swear I get winded now after about 50 meters of running. It’s really sad.

My “summer jeans” are starting to suffocate me. They’ve gone from needing to be held up with a belt to digging into my mid-section when I sit down. The first thing I do when I get home is to take those torture devices off and throw on some loose elastic shorts. If I had to pick, I’d say it’s one of the things I look forward to most each day. :) From there, my evenings are spent watching TV, playing video games, and what not. I’m keeping true to my promise before the race that I wasn’t going to start working out until at least a month after the race. I can’t say that I’m not itching to get out and do something though.

I’ve started thinking about next year and what the season will look like. Ironman Wisconsin 2007 is already on the calendar, but what else will be there? I’m thinking next season will be the season of 1/2s. I don’t really enjoy the sprint and Olympic distances that much - I just don’t like going all out for an hour or two. So I’m thinking maybe three or four 1/2s throughout the season with Wisconsin at the end of the season? Possible contenders thus far are Ironman California, Gulf Coast Triathlon, Liberty Triathlon, Chisago Lakes Triathlon. Those last two are local so are easy and afforable choices. Or maybe something like Ironman Baja, St. Croix 70.3, or Florida 70.3? Are any of you guys planning on attending any of the above? Or do you have other recommendations for early/mid-season halves? An early/mid-season 1/2 filled with my fellow bloggers sound like it could be fun, don’t you think? :)

But for now, I don’t have much else to say or report which is why I haven’t posted as of late. In all honesty, my life without training and Ironman is actually pretty boring. :P I think most folks would love sitting around at night watching TV and not doing anything else. But it’s driving me nuts though and I’m bouncing off the walls with my own self imposed exercise restriction.

Only another week until… FRREEEEEEDDDOOOOOM!

  1. Take it easy! You just did an Ironman! It takes a long time to recover. Listen to your body and enjoy the rest. It’s fun to plan for 2007. I’m doing the same thing. It’s hard not to want to do them all, isn’t it?

  4. You could go ahead and workout if you feel like it. Pharmie IRX:Ironman) just ran a marathon with a case of pneumonia so it can be done!

If you really want to honor your 4 week committment you can burn up several hours playing this:

I am amazed that your body can change shape that fast. I’m really good at gaining weight but I don’t think I’ve ever had my pants go from loose to tight in 3 weeks. What is so irksome is that you will go back to loose in about the same time whereas it would take me 3 months. Oh you guys….

  5. HA! Hope you survive the excercise restriction. :)

I’m planning on the Gulf Coast Tri next year as an IMFL warmup. The course overlaps quite a bit. Seemed like the right thing to do. Maybe I’ll see you around.

After my olympic distance race at Disney, I’m not a big fan of the Florida 70.3. Again, the courses overlap. Transition is a pain. The ride has lots of turns. Bleah. Go for Gulf Coast.

  6. We’ve got relatives in Chisago : ) It’s nice to know there’s a tri near there, I’ve been looking for races around our various sets of distance family to give myself a break between visiting aunts and uncles and cousins and grandparents.

Hey - I meant to give you copies of the pix I’ve got with you in them. Shoot me an email and I’ll send them. I’ve got one of the whole group at Stu’s as well, so let me know if you need a copy of that one.

  7. Hope the video games are fun! Matt loves those things. :) I am just starting to feel like myself again–ran 6.5 miles slow with a friend tonight and had a BLAST! Isn’t it so nice to follow our own plans now?

  8. You should come out and do the Ironman California! I’ll be there, it will be my first 1/2. Its so early in the season but down there its essentially always nice weather. Then you can go back to the freezing midwestern cold for another month or two! (like spring break!)

  9. I was just thinking the same thing this morning. I completed my first half IM, the Diamondman, this year on the same day you did IM Wisconsin. I’ve enjoyed my few weeks off, eating what I want, relaxing, sleeping instead of doing a 5:30am swim. Having said that, I’m itching to get back in the gym. After having trained for such a long period of time last year though, I’m begging myself to hold off a little longer to avoid burn out.

  10. NOT Florida 70.3

    that’s all i’m sayin’.

i’ll be sayin’ more though, after Ironman 140.6 Florida…

  11. I know how you feel, after doing Ironman, I have no desire to do anything else besides half IM’s or longer. So all Half’s for next year for me too.

Sound like a solid rest plan. I know how you can stay still for that long. Way to keep it together.

  12. Chris

Techie question for you - don’t know if this is the place to leave it, but I’m a bit new to bloggs. Found your blogg by chance when searching for info on HED Stingers (great site by the way - ended up reading way too much - as you do). See you were riding 60 front and 90 at the back at one point and then changed to HED 3Cs. I’m looking to buy a pair of Stinger 60s - would you recommend, have any comments.

All the best. Enjoyed your most recent post - I still have a suit in the cupboard I bought just after IM Switzerland that is a squeeze to get into…

  15. 2 things,

    1) it warms my heart that you too have summer jeans ;)

    2) saying you have one more week until freedom (to work out again, presumably), tells me you’re recovered emotionally already. Way to go!

  16. If you’re willing to travel, I would recommend Mussleman in NY in July. And I’ve got to give some love to the Greater Cleveland Tri in August too. The GCT is probably too late in your training schedule, but worked out well in my training plan last year. GCT is a tough but awesome bike course. Musselman is a pretty fast bike course, but the run may be tough with some serious climbing and little shade.

  17. Wow, can’t believe you survived the break. :)

Elastic shorts, can’t have too many of ‘em.
