To 1/2 Or Not To 1/2

That is the question? Two days out and I still haven’t signed up for the 1/2 this Sunday. On one hand, it’s nice having options to decide on races so late (unlike IMLP 2007) but all that happens is that I agonize over the decision for that much longer.

It’s going to be hot here again this weekend with heat advisories and all that sort of thing until Sunday night. Temperatures in the upper 90s with dew points around 70. Forecastfox even drew me a little pretty picture of what it’s going to be like through the weekend:

I’ve been out there in hotter and I suppose it would be good mental training if nothing else. But it just seems a little silly to pay to suffer through a race that probably won’t be fun come the run, doesn’t it?

I’m a little uneasy about doing something this close to Wisconsin too, although I would really be using this as a long training day. Just cruising through the swim, intentionally backing off on the bike and riding at IM pace (or slower?), and just running at a slow pace to have a supported long run. Heck. I might even walk through aid stations if I need to or not. I don’t think I’d build up any unnecessary fatigue and I have a rest week due next week (yay!) anyway, so even if I need a couple extra days from the effort I’ll have it.

I don’t know. What would you do? Would you pay to do a 1/2 if you had the fitness, but you knew it was going to be really hot and sticky out? Or would you do as the National Weather Service advises and, I quote, “seek shelter in an air conditioned building to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke”?

  1. I think it is wild that people can just decide to do a half at the last minute. I have been training all summer for a half and I’m nervous. Hats off to ya. I think you should do it. If you just cruise it, it can be a great training day. Remeber how hot Ironman Wisc. was last year, extra controlled training in the heat could help prep for that.

    If not, seek shelter!

  2. I have no idea, but I certainly don’t like the wierd little icon they give for Sunday…

What if Wisconsin is this hot? This would definitely be some good hours in the bank for that, provided you take it easy and don’t hurt yourself.

I plan to seek shelter in the the gym’s pool, myself :)

  3. I say go for it. Just take it easy on the bike and run. It will help you see how you perform in the heat in case you ever want to race down here in the south.

Seriously, it will also give you a chance to try out your nutrition plan too. If you are doing centuries without any major fatigue, I bet this will be just be another long training day for you.

In the end it’s your call. I don’t want to get blamed if you pull a hamstring, crash or something! :)

  5. Oh holy God is it really going to be THAT hot this weekend? Ugh… OK, I say don’t race, but get another century in… then I can be like, “Chris is out here somewhere too… if he can finish his century, so can I!”

  6. Chris,
you already have the fitness so no questions there. I would probably pass on a 1/2 with that weather forecast. I would definitely go out for a long bike that day, regardless, but not sure if it is a great idea to run 13.1 in that kind of heat. Could you do it- of course. Recovery could be extended though…and I know you mention taking it easy on the bike but isn’t that easier said then done once you are in a race environment?? Go for a long bike and run 30 minutes after….running long in hot temps…OOOF!! Save that misery for the actual IM!!

  7. Probably shouldn’t listen to me and Marz, we are out numbered. :)

I live in the south, so heat is what my life is about. Shower, sweat, repeat. I’m acclimated.

  8. I think it all depends on your financial situation. If I had the money, ya, I’d probably do it. But, turns out I don’t, so no, I wouldn’t do it. Just my thoughts.
