Rain, Rain, Go Away

Well, I didn’t run the local 10k that was here this weekend, but my fianceé is tougher than I am and ran despite the adverse conditions:

It was in the low 40s with a constant rain cooking, and was reasonably windy. Basically, it had all the elements of a miserable day. I stood there wearing three layers and I was still cold. As we speak, Trimama is probably outside in that weather riding 100 miles in similar weather so be sure to send her some warm thoughts while you’re in your cozy, climate controlled environment in front of your computer.

Anyway, to further solidify my position as a fair weather athlete, I haven’t done anything but swim since Friday and I don’t really have any intention of doing anything but swim until we get nicer weather again. I only have one pair of running shoes left and I don’t want to have to let them sit for days while they dry out. And I just refuse to put my bike on the trainer again for a ride, so I guess I’ll just relax. :) It is still only April… at least for one more day it is. There is still plenty of time for suffering.

On the weight front, I had four straight days weighing in at 160. So it’s taken a little over a month since my max weigh in this off-season, but I’ve managed to lose six pounds since then without really watching what I eat too much. I’ll be at race weight by September 10th. I haven’t even done any “hard” training yet.

And what is one of my posts that doesn’t talk about bikes. I cancelled my order for those Hed Stingers. They were supposed to get in last week mid-week, but as of Friday they still hadn’t gotten there yet. During that time, I was given an offer that I couldn’t refuse (or that I think I can’t refuse). Pictures to come later. I’m still waiting for my updated decals for my new bike to come in. It’s been over a week?! Sheesh. How long can it take to ship stickers? :P

  1. “managed to lose six pounds since then without really watching what I eat too much”???

Do you have any idea HOW UNFAIR THAT IS!?? It took me well over a month of calorie counting every single thing that goes into my mouth to do that!! Sigh.

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled programming. :-)

  2. I don’t blame you with the cold and the rain… I’ll run it, but I hate it.

  3. My dear fair weather “athlete”, who likes to rub it in that he can lose weight without trying and that his fiancee has more guts than him. I think you need to be reminded of the fearless leader of the da Republic, our friend Bold. All I have to say is ‘lawn darts”. Interpret that any way you want. :)

  4. I too am a fair weather athlete for the most part. But because my entire bike team was out doing a 20-60 mile road race (depending on their cat), and my excuse for not road racing was that I was running a foot race that day…I figured I’d never hear the end of it if I didn’t at least run the Get in Gear. So I ran it. It was cold. It was wet. My legs hurt today. But I was able to drink my beer last night with a clear conscience ;)

  5. oh no! Chris, dude — tell me it isn’t so.

you REALLY leave me with no choice, but to brand you not only with the dreaded SLP, but now the FWP stigma as well…

on the other hand, constant drama re wheelsets vaults you to the top of my respect list — have you considered a power solution? something tells me you are a watts kinda guy… inquiring minds want to know.

  6. 40s and rainy ROTS!!! Your fiancee is the bomb for running a race in that. I would take 15 and snowy over 40s and rainy any day! Hmmmm…am I a fair weather athlete, too? I think so…..hee hee

  7. FWIW, I wasn’t actually signed up for the race in advance. I was waiting until the last minute to see what the weather was like before I gave them my hard earned cash. The forecast didn’t look good so I didn’t sign up.

I just didn’t want you guys to think that I skipped a race that I had already paid for… although now that I think about it, I still may have skipped. But it would have been a harder decision. :)

  10. Thanks for the warm thoughts-that ride was just plain nasty in parts. Basically anything heading east took 5-8 mph away from you. Congrats to your fiance on her run-that’s a fun race. The weather will clear eventually- it better, we have a lot of riding to do.

  12. YAY for your fiancee. She looks like she is running great, even with ucky weather.

as far as the weight hting, i am not ofended, sinc ei have learned that most guys can say they want to lose weight and 24 hours later they lose 5 lbs. it goes along with the whole physiology about you guys not having to carry babies. at least, that is my story and i am sticking to it. btw, i think you sent teh 6 lbs to my house. so congratulations on the loss (it really is awesome) and redirect the weight elsewhere please. ;)

  14. That weight loss thing is in the genes as my weight yo-yos during the year too.

You look like a pretty fast runner in your new profile pic.

  15. GO CAROL! She’ll be signing up for IM before you know it. :)

I can do rainy, in fact kind of prefer it, but cold and rainy does bite. And you know why you can lose weight without even really trying? Because you have the metabolism of a hummingbird on uppers and Jolt Cola thanks to your hardcore consistent training over tihe years. I really admire your guts, Chris, and you deseve every reward your hard work comes with! :)
