Oh, How The Mighty Have Fallen

So today was my first day back in the pool. I haven’t swam since September 11th, 2005 - not a single yard. Still, I guess I didn’t expect to fall off the wagon quite as bad as I have. Swimming has normally been my forte and the thing that I worry least about. I’m not a blazing fast swimmer, but of the three sports of triathlon, I do proportionally the best at it.

Rewind to Wisconsin… I swam 1:00:22 for the 2.4 miles. That about 1:35 pace per 100 meters (probably 1:28 pace in yards).

Today… after 500 or so warm up (while the rest of the pool did around 1,000). The first set was 12×100 - first 6 on 1:30 and the last 6 on 1:25. I do my first 2 on 1:30. Shoulders and back were on fire. So I decide to drop down to doing 75s instead. I cranked out 4 of those… and was done. My arms were so tired, I could barely get them out of the water anymore. Ugh. 1,000 yards in 30 minutes. That’s pretty sad. :( And something tells me that even that sad effort is going to have me sore tomorrow. Bleh.

But in more cheery news, congrats to Wil for being the first to identify the votive candle holder in the “What Is This?” post. I, along with many of you, thought that was the coolest shot glass holder ever! I was all ready to register for one until I found out what it’s really supposed to be used for. It totally lost all its luster after that. :)

  1. well… let us all learn from this! Essentially, never completely cease doing something if we don’t want to start over.

I really don’t like that sad truth that we can work so hard to attain fitness and it takes so little time to degrade.

After a few weeks, you’ll be back to your shark-like self :)

  8. Sounds like your workout was the equivalent of windsprints for 8 miles on the first day back after a long hiatus. How about a nice easy long swim to ease yourself back into it?? Give all those little shoulder muscles time to remember? Ignore the clock and listen to your body!! You’ll be back in no time. For me, when I miss ONE workout, I feel sluggish and tired the next swim - like I’m swimming in molasses. It’s one of those sports that doesn’t let you get away with slacking… much easier to fake it in golf. That’s why we do this and we don’t play golf… ;) Hang in there…it WILL get better.

  10. I stink at swimming.

Hey, how do I know what my heartrate should be? The 220 - age thing just doesn’t fit for me - or else my heart would have exploded by now. My heart rates are always in the high 170s - 180s range . . . am I going to die?

I got my Nano band from Amazon - it has a skin-suit to protect it from sweat and a lariat that is cool, although, i broke my lariat : (

  13. IM swim of 1 hour?? That rocks. Obviously you’re a strong swimmer and it’ll come back in no time. I’d love to get my 1:25 down to a 1! …sigh…

  14. Months of completely doing nothing will hopefully not happen again. A week or two I can see. But surely, I could have at least swam or something.

Oh well. I’ll be back in the pool tomorrow morning. Thanks for the support, everyone! :)

  15. Welcome back the pool. I pretty much never left since the swim is my weakest area. You’ll be back to your preferred splits in no time.

  17. Woo hoo!!! See, it’s a chick thing. I might have been worried about you if you knew it was a votive holder - JK.

And remember that first time you went out to run just a little bit ago, first time you got back on the bike? Felt a little like …well, not your normal blazing self (and I don’t care what you say, you’re a little sharkie in the water). Just remember this day when your in the pool a few weeks from now intimidating all of the little fishies and wannabe fishies :)

  18. Man…I’d kill to swim 1000 yards in a half hour!

You know, you can still register for the votive thing and use it to hold shot glasses!
