Some options for 2006. I’m putting them all out there mostly for my own reference because I really have no idea what my year is going to look like.

April 15th - Earth Day Half Marathon [1/2 Marathon - St. Cloud, MN]
April 29th - Get in Gear 10k [10k - Minneapolis, MN]
May 21st - 70.3 Florida [1/2 IM - Orlando, FL]
June 10th - Liberty Triathlon [1/2 IM - Independance, MN]
June 11th - Manitou Sprint Triathlon [Sprint Tri - White Bear Lake, MN]
June 17th - Grandma’s Marathon [Marathon - Duluth, MN]

July 1st - Minneman Triathlon [Sprint - Lake George, MN]
July 16th - Heart of the Lakes Triathlon [Sprint/Oly - Annandale, MN]

August 12th - Turtleman Triathlon [Olympic - Shoreview, MN]
August 20th - Pigman 1/2 [1/2 IM - Someplace in IA]
September 10th - Ironman Wisconsin [IM - Madison, WI]
October 1st - Twin Cities Marathon [Marathon - Twin Cities, MN]
October 22nd - Chicago Marathon [Marathon - Chicago, IL]
November 4th - Ironman Florida [IM - Panama City Beach, FL]

I was toying around with Spirit of Racine and Steelhead, but those are probably too far to travel to for a 1/2. I’d rather save the money I would have spent at those races and put it towards something else. Florida is only up there because they potentially have IMNA spots and the Chicago Marathon is only up there because Carol has family in Chicago. I was thinking it’d be fun if she and her friends and spouses would all sign up and we could all run together. You know, nothing strenuous and always moving at the slowest persons pace kind of thing - a sort of family/friend bonding if you will. Apparently, my idea of fun and their idea of fun aren’t really the same though, so most likely that’s out.

I ended up on the trainer yesterday for an hour. Yes, a full hour on the trainer. I was proud of myself. That’s usually all I can stand mentally even when I’m in shape. :P I’m still keeping my running rather light to ease my legs back into the routine. I don’t want my ITB to start acting up again, and I’m going to try and avoid shin splints and any Achilles soreness this year too. That said, I hope to be back up to four miles by the end of the week and back to my staple hour long runs a week or two after that. If I can get back up to the point where an hour is the minimum amount of time I spend on a workout, that would be awesome.

My heart rate is still through the roof, despite them being lower than when I started just a few weeks ago. Looking back again last night at my training log on my early season training last year, I think it was a good month or even two before my HR really dropped significantly. And now I’m starting to wonder how much of that is a function of being in shape and how much is a function of weight (I’ve always heard that your heart rate drops about one beat per pound during exercise). I still have yet to make any progress in the weight department. In fact, I’m heavier now than I was a couple weeks ago. I haven’t really focused in on eating well yet. I’m eating better, but I’m not eating well. I’ll probably get more serious about that in a few more months. Food has always been a much bigger sacrifice for me than training ever is.

Speaking of which, it’s about time for lunch! :)

  1. Chris,

Have you done any core strength work before in your training? I’ve been doing some lately and it’s helped out a ton with my leg issues during running. I’ve read where Gordo says his knee problems went away as he became stronger.

There is a really good article in this months Triathlete magazine with some core strength excercises and a nice progression to follow. It may help you out.

  2. To answer your question from the other day, no I haven’t done the earth day half marathon in St. Cloud before. I know nothing about the course even! We thought it’d be fun, because the husband is running Grandma’s marathon and it’s a good lead into that.

BTW if you’re thinking of a marathon and do want to do Grandmas, the course is awesome. That is, if you’re not in need of having spectators throughout the beginning. It can get kind of lonely at times, with only the lake keeping you company. I much prefer that course to Twin Cities.

We should have a blogger party at Minneman this year, considering so many of us were out there last year without really knowing it!

  3. Chris,

That hour of trainer is awesome. I start to think the trainer is more for mental training than aerobic training.

  4. Great job on the one hour wlt session. My husband has been doing a lot of that lately because it’s dark when he gets home from work . . . and I hear about it constantly!!!

My heart rate has been through the roof recently, I think because of my cold.

Good luck with those 200 - 300 races you got listed up there . . .

  5. Mike: I definitely could use some strength training. I don’t have a gym membership anywhere and I’ve tried to avoid one so I don’t have to pay for masters swimming and a gym membership. But I might look for something at least for the next couple of months. Or at least until I can naturally strengthen up from hills and what not.

Jessie: I’m totally in for the Minneman party!!!

  6. I agree with Mike on the Core before comment. It’s helped a lot for me, too so far, doesn’t take very long, which surprised me.

STEALHEAD STEALHEAD STEALHEAD!!!!!!! Oh, and I think you should come and do Steelhead with me ;)

  7. Chris,

Check out the triathlete mag. I don’t think you will need a gym membership for those excercises.

For me, everything I’m currently doing is statics and has nothing to do with the gym. In fact, if the gym membership wasn’t included in the grad school setup I don’t think I’d have one either. The goal of most of the excercises are trying to activate neuromuscular pathways and gain some very minor strength to correct for other muscular imbalances.

Like Wil, I’m finding that this doesn’t require much time and is great to tack on to the end of a run workout.

  8. Baja 70.3?

Mexico, nice weather, and an ocean swim?

  9. Nice job on the trainer. Looks like you have a lot of races to choose from. I’m planning on doing the Pigman 1/2 Ironman and possibly TCM. Pigman will be my first HIM. Maybe it’s just me, but I think they could have come up with a little better name. :)

  10. Eh, just bag the year and channel your inner slob. Much easier to plan for…oh wait there is no planning. See I am saving you money already.

  11. wow… lots of choices. hey, i agree with Bolder… Baja. i’d do a half IM there… nevermind i have no training AT ALL for it. Mexico… who cares? :)

  12. Hmmm… I actually thought about Baja earlier, but forgot to put it on the list. It belongs up there, although if it’s between that and Florida, I’d probably still pick Florida if only because they have IMNA qualifying spots there. That 70.3 championship series thing doesn’t really appeal to me that much. :(

  13. Totally second everyone on the core stuff! I am amazed at how much it’s helped my lower back issues.

  15. I just checked it out, and I find it weird that 70.3 California is still open for registration. You should do that race! Just think about how nice and warm it will be. And if you sign up for a $49.95 active.com membership, you can save $2.00 on your entry fee.
