Geeked Out

I got home from work this evening to find this waiting in my Inbox:

Dear Runner:

The 2005 TC 10 Mile had more than 6,000 lottery entries for its field of 4,500 runners, and unfortunately your entry was not selected. Due to the popularity of “The Shortcut to the Capitol”, the Twin Cities Marathon (TCM) will offer 100 additional TC 10 race entries to benefit its selected 2005 Community Partners: Assistive Technology of Minnesota, Bolder Options, Team USA Minnesota, and the TCM scholarship program.

To download a Late Entry Fundraiser form for the TC 10 Mile and to learn more about the 2005 Community Partners, please visit the TCM website at www.twincitiesmarathon.org. The web site also has more information about our 5K run and hundreds of volunteer opportunities available.

Thank you!

Poo on you, TCM! Figures… I had about a 75% chance of making it in and I don’t make the cut. My friend did and Carol did as well. Oh well. I can play the cheerleader for once and support her while she’s out there. Hopefully, she’ll still want to do it even if I can’t be on the course with her.

So, to burn off some steam I did my own “long run” this evening. Yeah, I know I’m supposed to be on a recovery week. But I needed to unwind after work, I’m behind in my running, and I wanted to vent some frustration on not making the TC10. After reading Sascha and Flatman’s blogs and seeing their geeked out graphs from their Forerunners, I decided to take mine along with me today to be geeky too.

The output from the Forerunner software:

Which I then exported into an XML log to upload into MotionBased.com. From there, I used the “Keyhole 3D Map” option and exported the data to be loaded into Google Earth. That gave me the following satellite photo of my run:

What the hell! I’ll throw in my Polar data for the geek trifecta!

In summary, I did 12.2 miles at 8:37 pace and with my heart rate at 140?! I know that’s nothing to you runners, but that’s got to be some kind of personal best for me. I’m sure that it seriously helped that it was only in the high 60s today. That’s right… after weeks of weather and reports from the National Weather Service to stay inside where it’s air conditioned, we get this day where the high barely hits 70. :P The weather here is so manic.

OK, this post is entirely too long already. Thanks for all your comments to my last post. I really do appreciate all your guys’/gals’ concern! And it’s nice knowing that there are others out there who have gone through the same kind of funk. I was in a really crappy mood at work today. I sort of have been in a crappy mood there for the past couple weeks. :( I still might take vacation for a few days this week. And after today’s run, I probably could stand to take the next couple of days easy and/or just finish with a complete recovery week from here out. Something tells me I’m going to be sore tomorrow. :)

  1. Awesome run! Yeah, I often export the xml and bring it into GIS software I use in my work. It makes it so much more fun if I can over-analyze my running spatially as well.

As for TC10, It’ll be good to be a cheerleader for once, I guess ;)
I still want to whine, though. You are right, they must be anti-blogger. Dorks. They don’t know good athletes when they see their checks in the mail…

  2. Wow, that really was a great run, hard to keep that pace for that long! Way to go! And that stinks about the TC10, but it’ll be kind of cool to be on the sidelines snapping pics of your friend and Carol! Everything happens for a reason - hang in there!

  4. Well Chris, we’ll just have to find us another 15k/half-marathon to do. Maybe there’s one around in late September/early October. Maybe Wisconsin or Northern MN?

  5. Chris, you really motivate me to:

#1 Get serious about triathlons, and
#2 Get as geeked out as you.

This post is awesome. I love that stuff! You’ve got a great blog, too!

  6. …. ,,,,, ….., ,,, (Digital Drool).

Oh man, to think I was once techie-man with my 50-lap watch, and Polar a1 (yes the one with only one button).

Sorry you didn’t get into your race.

  8. Yikes, remind me never to run a race against you for one (fast dude + low average heart rate = me losing). Secondly, I love the graphs and tech stuff… The one thing I am not so impressed with my Polar S150 is its inability to download data to my PC…crap.

  9. Wow. 140 for 12 miles is impressive. As is the software. You are impressive, my friend. :)

  10. Hey Chris,
sorry you didn’t make it into the TC10. I’m doing my first marathon there, so if you see me wave:) I’m running a 1/2 next saturday in Richfield that looks like a good course. Then in September there is a 1/2 that runs with “The Defeat of Jesse James Gang” days in Northfield. The race is a little mundane as it runs through corn fields etc, but the post race party is a riot. That might be a little close to IMmoo, but you can check them out.

Very cool info on your run-not to mention a kickin run
