Another Day, Another Century

I really wasn’t looking forward to my ride today as the forecast said it was going to be another hot day. But luckily Mother Nature was kind and gave us some relief from the heat. I think the temperatures today averaged around the mid 80s, which was about 10 degrees cooler than what I anticipated it being. And there are certainly no complaints from me there!

I did the same route that I did last week and did six more miles around my house at the end to make it an even century. Or what my watch said was 100 miles? I downloaded the data and on the computer now it says 99.9 miles! Grrrrr! Oh well… it gave me an extra tenth of a MPH faster than what my watch said, so I guess it’s more than a fair trade. 100 miles at 19.5 MPH. That’s my fastest (solo) century to date, so I’m pretty happy with that. I felt like I had more in the tank still, but I was happy to be done. :)

Then it was a short 2.2 mile run and I called it a day. The legs are a bit tired, but sitting on my butt after a hard days work sure feels good. Hopefully, I burned off some of that Sweet Taste of Italy and Outback that I had last night.

  1. Sweet ride. One of these days, I hope I’m fit as you to just throw out a century on an ordinary weekend… solo! Nice work.

And yes, calories well spent. ;)

(side note: is it lonely all those hours on the bike by yourself? I’ve never attempted more than 45 miles on my own.)

  2. I tried to talk my buddies into a Century yesterday (I was pretty sure going all the way to Northfield would do it), but they argued and said the dog had to have his dinner. And 65-70 turned out ok.

Are you training for an Ironman or did you just go out and torture yourself on a century in evil heat/humidity for the fun of it?

  3. Oh and Heather, bike riding’s really not lonely. It can be fun with other people, but it can also be nice by yourself. Good time to get a lot of thinking done and you aren’t forced to adjust to a slower or faster pace than you want to do.

You are an absolute animal. (Check out the graph people).

Great ride - I’m so envious.

  5. Great ride (even if it wasn’t a true century)! Just joking. Good for you for that speed (average AND max).

  6. DC hit it on the head. You have plenty of time to think about random stuff (which I enjoy) and you don’t have to worry about riding too slow or too fast - you just ride at whatever pace is suitable for you. In the past, I’ve brought my iPod “in case of emergency” but of all the tens of times that I’ve brought it, I’ve used it maybe only 2-3.

DC: I’m training for Ironman Wisconsin this coming September. I love riding, but probably wouldn’t do a century solo if I didn’t absolutely have to. ;)

Phil: That 60.4 is pretty impressive, huh? I must have hit that when I was pedalling at 172 cadence. :P I’ll go back and fix that tonight…

  7. Sadly, riding alone is also the best way to train. It’s true that you don’t get faster unless you ride with people who are faster than you. But if you do it too often, you end up pushing yourself too hard, too often and the same goes for going out with people slower than you.

I actually have a copy of the Cyclist’s Training Bible and that’s a point he makes several times. It’s good to go out with a group, but don’t do it too often as it disrupts your own training curve.

  8. That’s good advice. I do usually train alone for shorter rides (20 to 45 miles), but maybe I should consider heading out by myself for the longer ones. It’s just something I’d never thought about before…

  9. dude, you’re still the real deal. boo-yah!

love that chart, i usually don’t show cadence on mine (it is, what it is)… it was cool on yours…

    but seriously dude — you’re a machine… totally inspiring!!
