A few days ago, I posted about switching chain lube and trying out White Lightning original. It’s a wax based, patented formula that claims to keep your drivetrain clean by trapping dirt in the wax and shedding this dirt off like a snake would its skin. It also has the added benefit of keeping your legs free from black marks when you accidentally rub up against your chain. I bought some a while ago but didn’t end up using it because of some negative reviews some other folks had given it. But I was bored and wanted to try something new so I figured I’d give it a shot.
“The mother of all bricks” as my neighbor called it. The plan was a half hour swim early in the morning, a five hour ride, and a three mile transition run afterwards. That was the plan anyway. If you’re looking for inspiration or a great story of man conquering the odds, read no further. You won’t get any of that here.
I should have known it was going to be a bad day when I saw the weather forecast in the couple of days preceding. The hot weather that we’re getting this week has been a nice pleasant change from the weeks past, but it kept getting hotter… and hotter… and hotter. The mercury topped out in the upper 90s today. The record high in Minnesota for today is also in the upper 90s, but we haven’t seen temperatures that high since 1937. Today, records in some cities will be broken. I’m pretty sure we rode through those cities this afternoon. To add insult to injury, there was a nice steady 15 MPH wind for most of the day.
I’ve never been very good on the hills on my bike. I’m working on it, but todays ride by far had harder hills than any other ride that I’ve ridden. We had them all today. Long, steep, steep and long. The course beat me up pretty badly and left me feeling pretty wiped by the turn around and I realized that I was only half way there. Those hills would be waiting for me on the way back home.
Coming out of one town, we make a left turn up a street that had a hill that looked like it had been taken straight out of San Francisco. It was on this hill that I experienced both of my two firsts ever on a ride. One, I started cramping. First, it was just a twinge as I applied pressure to the pedal. But with every subsequent down stroke, my muscle started cramping harder and harder and HARDER. It was like some kind of ratchet and with ever crank of the pedals, it would tighten up, hold, and tighten up some more on the next revolution. Finally the pain was too great. I couldn’t pedal through the cramping any longer so I pulled over to the side. This brings me to my second first of the day. I walked my bike up the rest of that hill. Yup, I’m now a member. If you’d have me before today’s ride, I probably would have put good money down that I’d never have to walk my bike up anything. I’ve seen it happen to folks before. I didn’t really see how it could come to that. Now, I’m all too familiar. A grown man, and a supposedly “in shape” “Ironman” one at that, walking his bike up a hill. If that isn’t the saddest of sights, I don’t know what it. By now I’m completely demoralized and wanting to just crawl into a hole and die. I still have 30 miles to go.
The rest of the ride was pretty much of the same although things did get better for me towards the end, but worse for my neighbor who organized the ride. He had similar cramping problems that I did and then he just competely overheated and bonked. At one point, my neighbor was feeling so awful he desperately needed to sit down in the shade for a few minutes. I certainly wasn’t going to pass up that invitation. I had some issues earlier in the day with my stomach not emptying out. I was taking in liquids, but they just seemed to sit in my stomach and slosh around. While we were stopped, my stomach finally started processing its contents and getting back out on the road I felt much better than I had before.
Eventually, we made it back to where we started from. By that time, I probably felt well enough to have been able to run, but I was so dejected by this point that I just passed and went back into the lake to cool off for a bit. My neighbor and I chatted about what a miserable ride we had just done. He’s feeling equally dispirited. I tried and convince him that the bike leg of Ironman Wisconsin was easier than what we just did.
So, that was my wonderful day. I’m sure one day I’ll look back on this day and it’ll be a source of strength knowing that I gave it a good effort and that I’m stronger now having done that training. But not today. As I sit here writing this, my stomach still feels queasy and I’m just in sort of a daze. I’m exhausted, embarrassed, and a little depressed. But tomorrow brings a new day and another opportunity. One day, I’ll ride that route again and have my revenge.
Phew. All fixed! It was actually easier than I thought it was going to be. Turns out it only affected pages where I had images in my posts that were wider than what the stylesheet specified. Firefox is fairly intelligent and just resizes those images so they fit the stylesheet. IE sees that they’re too big so keeps the image there and pushes everything else down to the bottom. I’ve resized the offending images and everything is all happy again.
Ok, time to prepare for the MOAB…
I just found out that my site doesn’t look right in IE. My navigation column is way down towards the bottom. Either you are all already savvy and using Firefox where things look right, or you all are just too kind of let me know that my site looks like crap. :) Anyway, I pretty much suck at writing CSS so it’s going to take me a while to figure out what’s wrong. If you’re here and this site is a complete mess, chances are I’m trying to “fix” things.
No time to do it tonight though. I need to get some sleep. I’m taking the day off work tomorrow to do the MOAB. More details tomorrow… if I’m still alive…
Well, I have good news and bad news. The good news is my achilles tendon seems to be happy now that I’ve given it a week or so of rest. I went on a 6.5 mile training run yesterday and didn’t have any problems or pain (and was happy to note that I didn’t lose any speed either!). The bad news? Yesterday morning, I started getting an ache in my shoulder during swim practice. Serves me right for trying to make up having missed last Monday by swimming Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. But oh well. I’m actually sort of used to swimming with tendonitis in my shoulder from my college days. Plus, if I need to take time off from swimming, it’s the least of my worries. But that pain parasite is persistent. It moved from my left knee to my right knee to my left shin to my left foot to my achilles and now to my right shoulder!
Yesterday’s weather was absolutely horrible. Right around lunchtime, we got the worst midday thunderstorm that I’ve ever seen. At high noon the sky was pitch black. I wish I had my camera with my at the time so I could have shared a picture with you all. During the storm, I went to move my car from the outside parking lot to a covered ramp. I tried crossing the street to get back into my office protected with my trusty umbrella, but the rain was coming down hard and sideways and I ended up looking like I had just hopped out of the shower. All in about 50 yards!
Today was a hot one with temperatures in the upper 80s and humid. I did a 31 mile ride and a very pathetic, very slow two mile run. I was melting out there by the end. According to the scale, I lost about four pounds of water out there despite taking in fluids during my ride! And the mercury is supposed to rise here in the next couple of days. I certainly don’t fare well in the heat, but I’ll take hot and humid over rain and clouds any day.
I just love getting all my workouts in and done before Sunday. After a long day outside yesterday, I took the liberty of taking the rest of the weekend off! My legs are plenty tired and can certainly use the rest.
I had ambitions of going out shopping for some new workout clothes, going grocery shopping, and doing various other errands. I have yet to leave my property line though. I probably wouldn’t have even stepped outside if I didn’t decide to give my bike a good cleaning. I figured that was the least I could do for it since it got me there and back again yesterday safe and sound in one piece.
During yesterdays ride, I spent a lot of time staring at the cogs of the riders directly in front of me and I noticed some folks with sparkling clean drivetrains. My chain and cogs always end up pitch black even after the shortest of rides. So with a clean and degreased chain, I decided to give White Lightning lube a try. It’s a waxed based product and suppositively it keeps things nice and clean. Dirt is supposed to stick to the wax and just shed off taking the dirt with it. And I hear that you don’t get grease stains when you accidentally rub up against your drivetrain. That would be nice because I always seem to be doing that. Some swear by it, while others have given it less lofty reviews (some folks report that the wax gums up other parts of the drivetrain and while others say that the lube doesn’t last very long). I still am a little hesitant to switch from my trusty ProLink lube, but I’m willing to give it a shot especially if it can keep things clean. It’s all about the bling, baby! :)
I did my first century ride of the year today. I actually wasn’t planning on going so far, but I missed a turn and my ride ended up being about 12 miles longer than I had planned for it to be. Oh well… I had to start the long stuff eventually.
I went as a part of a group ride with a local triathlon club around here. It was nice being able to ride with folks and to have water and food waiting for you every 20 miles. I hate trying to pack enough fuel in my jersey to five+ hours of riding.
Totals for todays ride was 104.2 miles @ 20 MPH on the nose. We rode a little bit faster than that for the majority of the ride, but between getting lost and blowing up around mile 90 my overall average went down. It’s nice that it didn’t drop below 20, though (although another few miles and it certainly would have!).
My legs, that is. I rode with a local tri club a couple days ago and it has me convinced that I absolutely suck on hills. I can generally keep up with everyone on the flats, but when I get tired I quickly get dropped off the back going uphill. My RPE and HR go through the roof and that’s not good. So I’ve decided that I’m going to start riding harder to try and build up some leg strength and some more muscular endurance. I probably should have been doing this all along, but it’s so much easier just sitting back and spinning and not really pushing hard. :P But I had a pretty good ride yesterday. Just 30 miles, but I averaged almost 2 MPH faster than I probably usually ride. I’m definitely feeling those 2 MPH today, though. My legs are toast.
I did a very short two mile run yesterday after my ride to test my achilles. It didn’t hurt at all which was good, but it seems a little sore today. It might just be from all the calf raises, stretching, and massage. It’s definitely not used to any of those things.
I also swam this morning which makes three days in a row for me. I thought I was in decent swimming shape by what the intervals that I’m swimming, but my shoulders and lats are pretty sore. Good thing I won’t be back in the pool until Monday. It’ll also be a nice mental break away from the 13 year old girls that are currently kicking my ass in the water.
Well, it’s been a couple of weeks since I hurt my achilles and it hasn’t really gotten much better. I suppose I didn’t really rest it other than to not do any long runs; I’ve still been running probably 25 miles a week on my bum foot. I think I’m going to not run at all this week and see what happens. That totally sucks, seeing that my running is my biggest limiter.
I got about half a mile into my ride yesterday when I started getting rained on. So I turned around and went back home. I had the intention of riding on my trainer for two hours, but 1:10 into it I just couldn’t take the boredom anymore so I hopped off. Today, the weather looks much the same as yesterday only colder and more windy. Lovely.
The more I think about it, the more I think I should roll my IM spot to IMC next year. I’d give me all year to just focus on recovering from all my nagging injuries and getting healthy for next year. If my friend weren’t signed up for Wisconsin this year and it weren’t probably his last Ironman, I’d be all over it. Decisions, decisions…
