Lazy Sunday

I just love getting all my workouts in and done before Sunday. After a long day outside yesterday, I took the liberty of taking the rest of the weekend off! My legs are plenty tired and can certainly use the rest.

I had ambitions of going out shopping for some new workout clothes, going grocery shopping, and doing various other errands. I have yet to leave my property line though. I probably wouldn’t have even stepped outside if I didn’t decide to give my bike a good cleaning. I figured that was the least I could do for it since it got me there and back again yesterday safe and sound in one piece.

white_lightningDuring yesterdays ride, I spent a lot of time staring at the cogs of the riders directly in front of me and I noticed some folks with sparkling clean drivetrains. My chain and cogs always end up pitch black even after the shortest of rides. So with a clean and degreased chain, I decided to give White Lightning lube a try. It’s a waxed based product and suppositively it keeps things nice and clean. Dirt is supposed to stick to the wax and just shed off taking the dirt with it. And I hear that you don’t get grease stains when you accidentally rub up against your drivetrain. That would be nice because I always seem to be doing that. Some swear by it, while others have given it less lofty reviews (some folks report that the wax gums up other parts of the drivetrain and while others say that the lube doesn’t last very long). I still am a little hesitant to switch from my trusty ProLink lube, but I’m willing to give it a shot especially if it can keep things clean. It’s all about the bling, baby! :)

  2. I usually couldn’t eat enough food for the given week to both avoid the minumum order required for no delivery fees and eat all the food I bought before it went bad. Besides, there’s a grocery store 1.5 miles away from my house and I shouldn’t be so lazy. Maybe when Carol and I are living together, it’ll be more feasible? It’s a pretty cool service, though!

  3. Now that’s what I need to do - clean my bike. It’s a hand-me-down Wheeler - SO old, but it works and it fits and it was free, so what can I say? I just got it about a month ago and it had been in an attic for probably several years. Oh… where to begin with the cleaning.

  4. Hi Chris, I stumbled across your site somehow. I like it.

Oddly enough, I was just talking to a guy at work this morning, about why his cogs were so sparkly clean - and why mine look so dirty - sure enough - not only does this guy wax his legs - but also his gears.

PS: Please tell me that you don’t own a P3, an S22 AND that sweet looking Team Phonak Time Trial bike.

  5. I read some more horror stories about guys using White Lightning and how the wax builds up all over the place. But a lot of these guys go on to talk about how they’re using motor oil and what not for their chains. That probably works, but just doesn’t seem right either. I think the guy at my LBS said it best when he said that it really doesn’t matter all that much which brand you use. Just make sure you use something and that you follow the instructions. I also noticed that my cogs have more of a matte finish than a shiny one. So I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to get them truly sparkly.

I sold the S22 to get the P3. If you know where I can get one of those Phonak TT bikes, let me know. I’d probably sell a kidney or two for one. :)

    Thanks for stopping by!
