Century+

hrm_graphI did my first century ride of the year today. I actually wasn’t planning on going so far, but I missed a turn and my ride ended up being about 12 miles longer than I had planned for it to be. Oh well… I had to start the long stuff eventually.

I went as a part of a group ride with a local triathlon club around here. It was nice being able to ride with folks and to have water and food waiting for you every 20 miles. I hate trying to pack enough fuel in my jersey to five+ hours of riding.

Totals for todays ride was 104.2 miles @ 20 MPH on the nose. We rode a little bit faster than that for the majority of the ride, but between getting lost and blowing up around mile 90 my overall average went down. It’s nice that it didn’t drop below 20, though (although another few miles and it certainly would have!).

  1. Wow! This is one of the coolest pages I’ve seen… I’ve read a few of your posts and they are really inspiring for me.

Thanks for the swim advice - one of these days I’ll get over the mind block. It made me feel a lot better to learn that such a low percentage was any more efficient than me!

  2. OK, can’t find your email anywhere, so sorry about the post here :)

I noticed your photo album, specifically IM Wisconsin - I’m interested in doing that race next year, but am pretty much going on enthusiasm as I have no idea - I’m sure I’ll have a better picture of what I’m in for after Steelhead in a few months. Any advice would be very much appreciated (for the half as well as IMWI - next year will only be my second full season, but I think I can make it ;) )

    Thanks, and take care.

  3. Wil,

The email thing was more less by design. I got tired of those spiders around the net that crawl around and gather your email address to spam you with.

I have your email address from your post. I just sent you a message. :)

  4. Great job on the ride. Why do you think you had a difficult time on the last 15 miles? Pace, nutrition? I am not great at reading these data output screens but it looks like you had some climbs toward the end.

  5. Mike,

I think my troubles were more with my pace than my nutrition. I had a few issues on the ride that I didn’t really write about. :)

At one point, I got caught in the back of the group behind a slower rider. The group kept pulling away, so I eventually left the slower rider and fought HARD to bridge the gap. I cooked myself pretty well during that stretch. I finally did bridge the gap and went up to the front determined not to let the group get away again. Well, I was on the leaders wheel when he started pushing the pace hard, but I stuck with him… at one point we were flying doing 27… then 28… then 29(!) MPH (well, with a tailwind) but there was no way I was letting him away from me. And this is when we missed our turn. We looked back and at first we thought that everyone must have just gotten dropped. A few minute sof slow riding and we realized that they must have turned somewhere behind us, and thus the twelve mile detour. I imagine those two events were the cause of my demise at 90.

Yeah… there were some hills coming back at the end. Those all just added insult to injury. :)
