Icky Toenail

Yesterday, the toenail on my right big toe split in two horizontally and partially fell off. I say partially because the right side didn’t completely fall off, so I’m left with a toenail of which the upper left portion is gone, but the other pieces are still there. It’s hard to explain, but it’s kind of gross and odd looking. This is the second toenail that I’ve had issues with since I started doing triathlons.

Now I understand why some hard core runners just have their toenails removed completely. They really don’t seem to serve much purpose. If it didn’t look weird and I wasn’t worried about how painful it would be to rip them off, I’d consider getting that done.

  1. why is it that marathon runners cut off their toenails? is it from all the stress on the feet? does that cause toenails to break?

  2. I’m not entirely sure. I think mine were caused my the constant beating of my toenails against the front of my shoe. But I don’t know why this only happened with two toenails and the other eight were fine?

I used to room with a guy that ran cross country in college. He said it was pretty common for those folks to have their toenails taken off so that they didn’t cause problems later. It’s kind of gross. :(
